Mini City

Overview

Our latest venture embraces the smart city concept, taking the idea of digital twins to a city-wide scale. Drawing from our extensive experience in the transport sector, the app offers a real-time view of Auckland’s transport dynamics, with data sourced directly from Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi. This isn’t just a map though. It is a dynamic, digital replica of the city, continuously refreshed with the latest information.

While our focus is on transport for the time being, we have plans to expand the reach of Mini City to include vital environmental data, like real-time weather updates, safe-swim locations and air quality measurements, making it a comprehensive resource for both residents and visitors alike. Users can explore Auckland via a detailed 2D map or an immersive 3D landscape, offering an engaging and up-to-date interactive experience of Auckland as it exists in the present moment.

Technical Details

Mini City weaves together a few key technologies, forming a cohesive experience for the end user. The front-end application has been developed using Mapbox, a powerful mapping platform known for its beautiful maps and exceptional performance.

Mapbox allows for excellent control over design, giving us plenty of flexibility in the overall experience which was imperative in a project like Mini City. Its great performance also allows for some of the more complex elements of Mini City to appear effortless, with slick transitions that function smoothly for the end user.

Our integration platform of choice for this application is FME, a data integration tool that acts as the workhorse behind the scenes. FME has support for data in hundreds of different formats, allowing us to pull from Mini City’s many different sources, make dynamic API queries on demand and then serve everything to the application. This powerful tool ensures that our digital twin of Auckland is always up-to-date with the latest information, functioning without input.

This combination of cutting-edge technologies allows us to not only keep pace with the city’s real-time changes but also to lay the groundwork for future expansions into environmental monitoring and beyond.
